Sports betting is still months away from launching in Ohio, but that hasn’t stopped the Columbus Crew from naming Tipico as the club’s official and exclusive Ohio sports betting partner.
Tipico’s long-term deal with the team gives it status as a founding-level partner, which includes entitlement rights to Tipico Beer Garden and Tipico Club (formerly the Rail Club). Tipico will also have prominent brand integration throughout Lower.com Field.
Tipico’s sportsbook is currently live in New Jersey and Colorado and the company now has deals in place to go live in Indiana and Iowa in addition to Ohio. Tipico’s deal with the Crew gives it access to the Ohio market as the state’s pro sports teams, casinos, and racinos are eligible to purchase Type A Licenses.
As laid out in House Bill 29, a Type A License allows the licensee to enter into a contract with up to two mobile sports betting vendors. The first “skin” (a distinct mobile app) costs $3 million. A second skin can be purchased for $10 million, but only if the entity can prove an economic benefit to the state.
Crew, Tipico Laud New Partnership
“We are thrilled to announce our partnership with a highly respected global brand and passionate soccer enthusiast in Tipico,” David Jenkins, the chief operating officer of Haslam Sports Group, said in a statement. “… Our long-term agreement with Tipico represents an exciting development for Crew supporters and sports fans in Central Ohio and throughout the state.
“Providing a world-class experience for supporters is at the core of what we do and so we look forward to increasing fan engagement opportunities in Columbus and throughout Ohio through this partnership.”
As part of the partnership, the team says it will “develop a wide variety of digital content and engagements as well as joint community programming.”
The Crew will open its 27th Major League Soccer campaign on Feb. 26, playing its first full season in Lower.com Field.
Tipico plans to announce “opportunities for registered users to take advantage of promotions, giveaways, and sweepstakes offers through collaborative programs and co-created activations” subject to the state’s regulations.
In a statement, Tipico U.S. CEO Adrian Vella said the company is looking forward to partnering with the crew as part of its focus on the mid-west.
“The Midwest will play an important role as we continue our multi-state expansion in 2022, and we could not have asked for a better partner to help us introduce the Tipico brand and our proprietary technology to sports bettors in Ohio and beyond,” Vella said.
